In February of 2018, Wright Containers was indicted for disposing highly toxic chemicals into a hidden storm drain that led to waterways near homes and schools. Among the affected schools are Gregg Elementary School and Hartman Middle School, which are within 1 mile of the storm drain. The surrounding area is an industrial-residential commercial neighborhood. The presence of benzene and other toxic chemicals so close to homes and schools is a big cause for concern. The release of the toxic chemicals led not only to pollution of the area, but also injured employees. The Houston Fire Department has had difficulty catching illegal dumpers in the past. Prosecutors of the case, however, say that they hope this case increases environmental accountability in the future.
It is absolutely crucial to dispose of hazardous wastes in a manner that complies with local, federal, and state regulations.
